A Southern Love Letter...

Spread The Love!

There is nothing more fitting than a post about barbecue this Fourth of July weekend! But this post is extra special because it allows me to introduce you to a new company and an old friend.  I fought the Facebook fascination for a long time vowing to not participate and get "sucked in".  But then I had so many family members and friends on the site that I gave in and gave it a try. With that decision, it opened up the path to reach more wonderful readers for my blog and to highlight products worthy of a love letter.

I love people with passion, those that take a passion for something and go for it! That is exactly what Spread The Love is all about, a father and daughter collaboration (it doesn't get any better than that!) with a passion for food, family and fun.

Spread The Love celebrates the individual by offering made-from-scratch, artfully created, and delicious hot sauces. They use quality ingredients and creative execution to deliver a hot sauce that is not only tasty, but full of personality!

From the website:

"Spread the love is a  father, daughter collaboration. Charles DiBella has been working in the food industry for 25 years and has included his daughter Angela in everything. They share a passion for creating food together and this has been a project both are very excited about".

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to sample a few of their flavors...Bourbon Peach BBQ and the Tequila Lime. Both offer a unique fresh taste that not only "brings the heat" but a flavor to compliment any beef, chicken or seafood dish. The beauty of the sauces is that while they will add heat to your dishes it won't burn your mouth and make your dish inedible as so many hot sauces on the market do!

Here are a few dishes I have made this weekend to entertain and delight my family and friends...

Grilled Hot Wings by the pool...

Bourbon Peach and Tequila Lime Wings

We like to keep our wings whole but you can certainly cut them in to the more traditional wing and drumette pieces.  I marinated the wings for a few hours in a small amount of olive oil and two kinds of seasoning blends. I separated the wings to allow for two flavor options...Bourbon Peach and Tequila Lime.  I coated one batch with a Table Blend seasoning and the other with a Caribbean Citrus both offered by Mrs. Dash. I also added fresh lemon and lime juice to the Caribbean Citrus batch.  We grilled the marinated wings and at the end coated each batch with the hot sauce using a barbecue brush. I used the sauce sparingly on some to add just a "hint of heat" and generously to "turn up the heat" on others.  But regardless of the amount of heat you enjoy on your food these hot sauces brought the flavor!  I served with celery and carrot sticks with a side of our favorite Blue Cheese and Ranch dressing.

Tip: Anytime you use a sauce to barbecue put the amount you need in a bowl so that you don't contaminate the rest of jar!

Pulled Pork Sandwiches...after a day of boating!

Bourbon Peach BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwiches

I wanted to participate in all the boating fun with my family and friends so I took advantage of my crock pot to ensure that I could! I bought a 4-5 pound lean Boston Butt, rubbed it down with a pork rub from McCormick and coated it with the Bourbon Peach BBQ Sauce. I put the meat in the crock pot before I started my day (around 8:00 am), turned it on low and hit the lake for some sun and fun! I cannot even put in to words the smell in the house when we returned around 4:00! I can use one word...Ahhmazzing!!
The meat just pulled apart using two forks to separate and did I mention the flavor...I think I heard angels...:-)

I served on delicious onion rolls with our favorite specialty store coleslaw and fresh steamed corn on the cob straight from the farmers market. I had planned baked beans on the side as well but everyone got so excited about the pork that I forgot to put them in the oven...okay so there goes the Martha Stewart comparisons...lol!

Tip: Put your fresh un-husked corn wrapped in a damp paper towel in the microwave for 7-8 minutes. You will get perfectly steamed corn in minutes and the husk and annoying silk will just fall off!

Spread The Love Hot Sauce offers a variety of delicious flavors and are packaged individually or in a variety pack.

Spread The Love with your family and friends, I know mine are so glad I did!! And I cannot wait to try them all!!

Have a Happy and Safe 4th of July and God Bless America!

A Southern Love Letter...

A piece of heaven in my very own backyard...

Three years ago when we purchased our property, two things sold the house to us. One was the amazing huge kitchen and the unique backyard.  We live in a traditional subdivision which was important to me since we moved here with no family or friends close by. But my husband was very set on finding our compromise of living in a subdivision and finding a unique lot that would make us feel secluded.

Well we found uniqueness for sure...a portion of our backyard is a peninsula!

 Our peninsula

So as you can see, we added my new love to the peninsula (we call it "the point")...my husband purchased a cypress swing for me last year as a birthday gift.

Here is what we did:

Hubby on the swing after we finished the swing posts

We added the decorative corbel's and hooks for hanging flowers...cute, huh!

Minwax now has Stain and Poly in one...so easy! I chose the Pecan stain for the swing.

LOVE!

Louisiana Cypress Swings & Things, Inc.

The inspiring story from their website:

We the Brooks family officially opened Louisiana Cypress Swings and Things Inc. two years ago, turning our backyard hobby into a full blown business.  We have always felt that swings are the perfect way to bring the entire family together.  This desire to be together with our family is the reason that we’re in business.  We want everyone to share this experience of spending quality time relaxing with the family, and this feeling is demonstrated in our motto: “We believe the world would be a kinder, gentler place if more people had a porch swing.”
For more than 23 years, we have been building cypress outdoor furniture in our backyard.  In 2002, we decided it was time to join the online business world, so we began selling on eBay.  Very soon after launching our eBay venture, we realized that we couldn’t keep up with the orders by ourselves, so we hired a couple of people to work for us.  Unfortunately, we found that the employees didn’t have the same pride in their work as we did. Due to some health problems, Andrew had to retire from building our furniture. Rather than let the business go under, two of our children, Jason and Marlayna, offered to help run the business. Together we borrowed some money, built our current building, and opened Louisiana Cypress Swings and Things Inc. Andrew continues to design new furniture and lend moral support when and where possible.
Our success has been a blessing.  We currently serve more than 60 retail stores in the southern region of the United States, we retail out of our shop and on eBay.  We also attend local fairs and craft shows in the Ark-La-Tex area. Our efforts were noticed by a staff writer for “Shelter Magazine,” who wrote about our company in the Nov. /Dec. 2007 issue of Shelter Magazine.
We are proud to be a locally owned and operated Louisiana company. We have been very fortunate in our endeavors and we have tried to give back to our community where possible.  Our community is important to us, as we would not be here without them.
Our future is bright.  We’re looking forward to the coming years and the chance to introduce the rest of the country to the joys of swings and other cypress furniture.

The Brooks Family

You must check-out the website, what an amazing family!

A Southern Love Letter...

A beautiful book and it's Read Across America Week...a win-win!

It is perfect timing for me since I just received my new book Stealing Magnolias. It is a beautifully illustrated book by Debra Shriver and takes us on her journey from a New Orleans courtyard. Debra is a twelfth-generation Southerner, passionate preservationist and jazz devotee that created this book as part-love letter and part-scrapbook. It gives readers a rare tour behind courtyard walls and private gates of our mysterious city, which is often considered the Paris of America.

So whether it's food, gardens, decor, decoration, architecture or design, this book engages the reader to experience every element of the world's most romantic cities.  So I will make the time this week to find a quiet place and take it all in. Then I will place it perfectly on the nightstand of our guest room for others to enjoy during their stay!

I first discovered this amazing book at my local B & N for $60, a little pricey, not that it is not worth it! But I was able to find it on Amazon.com for $34...had to anxiously wait for it in the mail, but worth the savings!

If you have kids or you are a kid at heart...Put on your hat and read with a cat!

Tomorrow, March 2nd would of been Dr. Seuss's 107th birthday...Happy Birthday!

His first children's book published in 1937...

I love them all but you gotta love...

And it isn't Christmas at our house until we see...

Tell me what your favorite Dr. Seuss book is!

A Southern Love Letter...

See Ya Later Alligator!

As I mentioned in an earlier post,  I just love to visit arts/crafts shows to experience local talent and find unique finds for our home. We knew when we up-rooted from Florida and moved to Louisiana that we would incorporate the spirit of this state wherever we could. But let's not get carried away, my husband's prized stuffed ducks are safely hung in his "man cave" a/k/a the garage!

One sunny spring day last year, we visited a Baton Rouge art market. This market is one of the larger ones in the area so it made for a full day just trying to see it all. But amongst several of my favorites was a very unique booth called Swamp Dog & Friends. What first drew us in was the site of cypress frames initially and then as we got closer the fine photography stopped us in our tracks.  The pieces were unique and quirky but also had a beauty to them because of the way the photographer, Robin Bell, incorporates the charm of Louisiana.

And with so many to choose from, I was drawn to this guy, an alligator. We had the perfect spot for him at the bar in our home.

Don't judge, who hasn't been there after martini night!

Swamp Dog & Friends has many wonderful options to choose from but it will be hard to pick one because they are all full of personality, charm and unique beauty!

Here is the sweet story from their website:

The story of Swamp Dog is a sweet and simple one. Shortly after Hurricane Katrina, she was found on an old gravel road between the banks of Bayou Lafourche and a sugar cane field near a small village called Napoleonville in South Louisiana. No one knows for sure if she was a victim of the Great Hurricane or simply a victim of sad circumstances, the kind that finds so many strays abandoned and alone. Her rescuer, a good man from the swamp took her home and made her whole again. He named her Shiloh unaware of the journey he would soon take with her, a journey from her humble beginnings as his little stray hound of questionable heritage and pedigree into the world of Swamp Dog.

Swamp DogShiloh began her career in front of the camera rather suddenly. One day, Robin Bell and her business partner, Jennie Alexandry traveled to the swamp to visit the man. Their sole purpose was to photograph an old blue pirogue soon to become firewood for an upcoming bonfire. The man tied the little blue pirogue for towing then helped the two women into his boat. When the perfect photo-shoot location was found, the small boat was tied to a large cypress knee. Suddenly, out of nowhere, Shiloh came running through the brush on the lake’s bank. The man from the swamp had forgotten his new family member and, apparently, she was not going to stand for it. Without warning, Shiloh jumped into the shallow water and proceeded to swim through the cypress knees towards the little blue pirogue. When she reached the boat, she climbed in, desperately trying to inch closer to her Papa. Before long, Shiloh was standing over the side of the boat. The photograph that was soon to become Swamp Dog was staring right back at the three surprised onlookers. Shiloh cried, barked and begged for Papa; then, just at the right moment, Robin did what she does best – she snapped a memorable photograph. After Shiloh’s impromptu photo-session, Robin turned to the man from the swamp and remarked, “Do we have a picture to give your wife for Christmas”! Yes, he did have a unique Christmas gift. And as for Robin, Jennie and Swamp Dog, well as they say, the rest is history.

Robin A. Bell is a self taught photographer who currently lives in Thibodaux, La. She currently works as a child psychologist in Napoleonville, LA. Swamp Dog & Friends was conceived and developed by Robin and her friend and colleague, Jennie T. Alexandry.  And we would be remiss not to mention Arch A. Bell, Robin's father who is the Woodcraftsmen and Frame Designer, considering his work was what drew us to this wonderful booth in the first place!

Check out the website, it's so worth a look!

My next one? I'm thinking the Blue Crawfishtini...:)

A Southern Love Letter...

A local outdoor event leads to an introduction to some really great guys...

On an absolutely gorgeous Saturday, Jt and I attended our local Cabela's Captain Weekend event. Along with supporting our local CCA chapter we met some great vendors,  one of which was Gulf Way Sportswear & Specialties. They are a new energetic company that shares an enthusiasm for the Gulf Coast Region and specializes in outfitting and promotional products.

But what got our attention was their wonderful welcoming attitude and the fantastic t-shirts they had on display in the booth. The t-shirt that was front and center was their Navigation Collection, a collection of three styles that represent Grand Isle, Marsh Island and Delacroix Island. But in addition to these options, Gulf Way Sportswear would like to know the region where you like to fish. They currently have a campaign that allows you to get involved in customizing local sportswear,  and in JT's words..."it doesn't get cooler than that!" But from a female point of view that also shares the love of the coast, I loved the bright colored t-shirts with the pelican logo on the back. They come in a variety of colors, long or short sleeves...nothing wrong with looking cute while you're fishing!

Now that I have discussed the business side of things, I saved the best for last. Gulf Way Sportswear & Specialties promotes events and issues unique to the Gulf Region, such as coastal conservation and development and that is exactly why they made my blog!

The back of my t-shirt...love the logo!

Get in contact with Gulf Way Sportswear & Specialties, they will come to you for an obligation-free introduction to discuss how they can enhance your marketing strategy.

We really enjoyed meeting them and we think you will too!

A Southern Love Letter...

Today's post may seem redundant to my Facebook friends because I was so excited about my recent purchase that I posted a picture minutes after leaving the mall that caused quite a stir!

This was my post: My new Rain Bops! Crazy but love them...:)

I really did think about my actions for a couple of seconds, knowing that the response may not be the one I was feeling or looking for. It didn't start off well as my first response was jokingly harsh. I took it in stride because if I was going to wear my new boots out in the world I would have to embrace my attraction to them and own it!

Well things improved dramatically on my FB chat, as they all eventually came around and warmed up to these adorable boots! And when my conservative husband surprisingly referred to them as "bad ass" I decided to "strike while the iron is hot" and make them my next candidate for the Created with Southern Hands post. Not only do they create these fab boots in many custom designed patterns and styles they have a full line of accessories and home decor. But more importantly is the journey that owners Brent and Amy Bernard have taken to reach their dream without compromising their values!

Who knew these crazy boots that were calling my name to take them home would cause such a stir and have so much value and tradition behind them...I love them even more now!

Here is their story from the website:

 Bernard Family

About Us

You never know where life will bring you. When Brent & I began Beehive in 2000, we never imagined we’d be a part of something as exciting as this has been. We have such wonderful customers and a truly great staff.

I started working at a very young age in my father’s mobile home dealership in Opelousas, LA. I cleaned many mobile homes and also taught swimming lessons on the side. I did this throughout my childhood & teenage years. Brent also started working at an early age. He was 9 when his career began in Natchitoches, LA. He & his brothers sold watermelons on the side of the road to customers headed for the lake. Their watermelon stand was known as having some of the best watermelons around. Even in our childhood, we both learned the value of hard work and dedication.

We met at Louisiana Tech University, where we both studied and earned our degrees. Upon marrying in 1989, we moved to Nashville to begin our careers. We quickly decided that wasn’t the place for us. Family is a big part of our lives and being far from home was difficult. We moved to Ruston, LA and started our own business. It was a gift shop near the University. For 10 years we provided unique and fun gifts to the public. It was very rewarding to see how our hard work paid off. People knew they could rely on us to provide them with quality products at a low cost and with the friendliest service around. After we sold our business, we became sales reps for TY. We did that until starting Beehive in 2000.

The experiences we have gained over the past 20 years have shown us what the public wants, what retailers need and having done all of that ourselves, it has given us the knowledge of being able to provide that from a wholesale prospective. Beehive strives to excel as the top nation-wide provider of fashion jewelry displays that are affordable, versatile and trendy.

Finding and designing new products for you has been our passion from the beginning. We have looked world wide for the latest and sometimes undiscovered jewelry and accessories for you to sell. These treks have taken us to India, Philippines, Mexico, Argentina, Thailand, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia and all of the United States.
Our two sons, Beau and Tatman, have been able to join us on several of our journeys. God has truly blessed us with a wonderful business and a loving family.

As we continue on our journey, we still maintain our passion and that is to design and find new and wonderful pieces for you to sell at great prices, even if we have to travel the world to do so. Thank you for your business and we wish you continued success and blessings to you.

A Southern Love Letter...

If you already know me than you know that I am a huge fan of supporting anyone who has followed a dream to create their own products. I love to travel to local farmers markets, art/craft shows and local speciality shops/boutiques to experience local talent.

Today in my first installment of A Southern Love Letter, I am celebrating in a huge way! She is an icon in Louisiana to many women and her jewelry is considered as hot a status symbol in Louisiana as Tiffany is to New York.

Mignon Faget is driven to design jewelry derived from natural and architectural forms found in her native New Orleans environment.
“I was born here and I’ve lived here all of my life. What is so beautiful about Louisiana comes out through my work. It is a mysterious place.”
Mignon Faget began her design career in 1969 with the launch of her first ready-to-wear collection. The success of the collection prompted her to explore what might be the perfect belt, pin or necklace to enhance these ensembles. This early exercise and her studies in sculpture from Sophie Newcomb College led to her first jewelry forms. Since then, jewelry has become her all consuming interest in the field of design.
From the beginning, she has worked closely with natural forms, never simply duplicating but always extracting the substance, the essence of a particular shape…refining it to perfection. “My work is like a journal. Whatever it is that I am particularly interested in at that phase of my life comes out in my work.”
A fifth generation New Orleanian, Faget has flourished in the culture and traditions of her birthplace. Her collections reflect this. Her first jewelry collection, SEA, is the transformation of the natural jewels found on the Gulf Coast into wearable objects of adornment. Botanical designs include indigenous plants such as Banana Leaves, Cycas and Palmae. ROMANESQUE RETURN reflects the architectural details of the historic Henry Hobson Richardson Library located on the famed Lee Circle. IRONWORKS is her newest study based on the historic VieuxCarre work of Marcellino Hernandez, the most renowned of the Spanish iron forgers in Louisiana. LOUISIANA has a touch of whimsy with the Gumbo Necklace and Mardi Gras Charm Bracelet.
Mignon Faget’s formal training in the arts began at Sophie Newcomb College of Tulane University from which she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, with a concentration in sculpture. She furthered her studies at l’Atelier de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris and the Parsons School of Design in New York. Faget returned to Tulane University to take post graduate classes in botany and other areas of personal interest.
Faget has long been an active preservationist and art advocate. She has donated proceeds of her designs and her first gallery building to the Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans. She has been an active leader and supporter of the arts and has served on boards for several of the local museums.

The Artist...Mignon Faget...it's worth a look!
